The International Communities Organisation (ICO) led by Secretary General James Holmes and H.E. Abdulla Shahid, President of the 76th United Nations General Assembly, International Ambassador to ICO met with United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk.

During the meeting, ICO’s Secretary General highlighted the ICOs’ robust track record in minority rights prevention. Most of today’s conflicts are intrastate, often involving the violation of the human rights of minority groups. This is why ICO works to build peace, striving to build long-lasting harmony by protecting minority rights and fostering peaceful coexistence.

A notable focus was placed on ICO’s work in Kosovo. In the heart of the Balkans, Kosovo has long been a flashpoint of ethnic tensions. Yet, within this complex landscape, the ICO has achieved a historic milestone. This landmark agreement between ICO and Deputy Prime Minister Emilija Redžepi, the Minister for Minority Rights, facilitates dialogue between non-majority communities and the Kosovo government. As part of the agreement, the forum for non-majority communities was established. The objective of the forum is to strengthen minority groups participation in decision-making, enable policy development based on community’s perspectives and facilitate economic development in non-majority communities.

James Holmes also highlighted ICO’s efforts in Cameroon, particularly its capacity-building programme with local councils in the North-West and South-West regions. By encouraging the adoption of gender mainstreaming within local councils, ICO is enhancing women’s participation in local governance and building local resilience.

“The protection of minority rights is essential to the peace and stability of our global community. By fostering inclusive dialogues and promoting the rights of all individuals, we can bridge divides and build a foundation for lasting peace,” stated former UN General Assembly President Abdulla Shahid.

ICO continues to play a crucial role in advocating for minority rights amidst modern conflicts. Paramount to our approach is our commitment to creating inclusive dialogues that bridge divides and promote lasting peace

High Commissioner Turk commended ICO’s efforts and reaffirmed the UN’s support for initiatives that advance the protection and inclusion of minority communities worldwide.
